Ellen Miller, PhD, PT is the Executive Director of the Center for Aging & Community and holds the University’s DeHaan Endowed Chair in Gerontology. Miller was a driving force behind the creation of CAC as a Center of Excellence in 2001 and was named Associate Director in 2003. She assumed her current role in 2005.

As Executive Director, Miller works to advance the Center’s role as educator, consultant, convener and collaborator on issues important to older adults. The Center focuses on establishing effective partnerships between the community and academia, using the expertise of the University to assist with and drive initiatives and research that will solve real world problems and improve the quality of life for older adults.  Miller has also led the Center to a prominent role in gerontology education and training, and has established partnerships with local, state and national aging network organizations.

Under Miller’s direction, the Center has secured more than $3.6 million for initiatives sponsored by the Indiana State Department of Health, the Indiana Division of Aging, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce Foundation, and the Indianapolis Retirement Home Fund. Her vision and passion led to the creation of the Indiana Collaborative Conference on Aging, held in 2007 and 2010. She also chaired the planning committee for the 2010 Exercise and Physical Activity in Aging conference, a national professional gathering sponsored by the American Physical Therapy Association’s Section on Geriatrics.

Miller, whose professional background is in physical therapy and gerontology, holds a professorship in the Krannert School of Physical Therapy.  She has expertise in gerontology and motor contro. From 2001-2008, she authored seven research publications, three of which she was first author, and has presented her research findings to national and international audiences.
